With development of LED display technology, consumers’ pursuit of better display quality has been driven continuously. Nowadays, we’ve entered COB packaging era that the boundaries of LED display have been broken through once again with its more delicate and realistic image quality.
What are the specific advantages of COB screen?
1. Break through pixel pitchlimit
CSMD’s recognized pixel pitch limit is 0.7, yet COB reaches to P0.4 or smaller with adopting Mini/Micro LED chip. Mini LED size is 100-300um, Micro LED’s is usually smaller than 100um or 50um. Compared with face up chip, flip chip has no bonding wire, also the sapphire substrate faces up which just occupying a small area on PCB. All these leads LED screen to smaller pixel pitch.
2. Excellent view experience
Generally, smaller pixel pitch with higher PPI (Pixels Per Inch) enables COB to present high-resolution and delicate image quality. It gets viewers closer to watch COB screen more comfortably without noticing individual pixels. Benefiting from itself is the surface light source, which emits light efficiently, improves light quality with excellent brightness and wide viewing angle performance. Wide viewing angle performance means viewers get consistent color and imagery from different angles, regardless of location.
Moreover, currently COB screens basically use flip chip (FCOB). Compared with face up chip, flip-chip’s upside-down electrodes and directly bonding to pcb leads to a larger light-emitting area, higher luminous efficiency, and its high brightness ensures clear visibility in all environments, even in bright outdoor environments.
At the same time, it has features of high refresh rate and grayscale control. High refresh rate enables display to show smooth images, avoiding screen flickering and afterimages. Especially, it’s suitable for stage performances and fast-moving image display. Grayscale and gamut enhanced by Novastar advanced algorithms and calibration, which can finely adjust the brightness of LED, achieve smoother grayscale transitions, more accurate color performance and image details, enhancing the viewing experience.
Since no bracket and bonding wire of FCOB packaging technology, the space occupied by flip chip on substrate is smaller, which can exhibit more black color and improve contrast significantly.
Lastly, Mini/Micro LED contain an inorganic material named GaN that brings better brightness but power consumption.
3. Trustworthy reliability
Flip chip bonding to PCB helps heat directly dissipated through substrate, screen temperature greatly reduced, high junction temperature avoided from the damage of components and affect service life.
Besides that, the whole COB module is packaged with epoxy resin. COB screen has super high protection performance that no risk to damage LED chip in the process of product transportation, installation, moving, disassembly. With abilities of anti-collision, waterproof, dustproof, anti-static and other excellent protective properties, COB stability is guaranteed and service life is longer.
4. Superior design to broader market
DMoiré and screen reflection are effectively suppressed through filming technology which perfectly matched with VR since Chromakey technology is replaced by LED shooting.
COB modules use thinner PCB boards of 0.4-1.2mm thickness. Furthermore, NovaStar 3-in-1 solution (control chip+hub board+power supply) could control cabinet’s thickness to 35mm. Thinness and lower weight make COB cabinet popular in conference and cinema screens.
With above advantages, COB screens will be widely used in professional market, commercial market even consumer market.
